From the Library
It's the time of year where we move our thoughts from reading books
from school to reading books from other places! With this in mind,
please help your student to return all library materials by next week.
If your student still has library materials checked out, you will
receive a reminder note at parent conferences. Thank you for helping
us to keep a great library of materials for all of our learning
community to share!
To keep your student reading all summer, remember these great
resources: the Pawlet Public Library, the Kittay Library in Rupert,
the Pember Library in Granville, the recently opened used book store
in Granville next to Scottie's (owned and operated by Mettawee alumnae
and substitute teacher Sarah Cramer!), and local bookstores like
Northshire bookstore.
Another source of reading is the internet. Mettawee subscribes to
Book Flix, a website with over 80 popular fiction and non-fiction
titles read aloud. Point your browser to http://bkflix.grolier.com.
The username is mettawee and the password is bookflix.
Two examples of other free online sources of books are: Storyline
Online, a site where celebrities read children's books aloud, located
at http:///www.storylineonline.net/, and StoryNory, located at
http://storynory.com/
So borrow a book from the public library, buy a book from a new or
used bookstore, listen to books on a CD player, cassette player, on
the computer or on an mp3 player -- keep on reading this summer!

Author Visit - Book Signing At Mettawee!!
Award winning author and illustrator Nick Bruel is coming to visit with our students in grades K-3 on Friday, May 14, during Children's

the wildly popular "Bad Kitty" series. See this week's Big Blue for an order form for books. If your student is not in grades K-3, not to
worry! Nick is doing a special evening event for us right here at Mettawee, cosponsored by the Northshire Bookstore! Check out the
flier in Big Blue and spread the word -- the public is invited!

Next week is Children's Book Week
May 10-May 14 is National Children's Book Week. We'll celebrate with our author visit, a story walk of some classic favorite children's
books on the school patio, and there will be extra surprises as well. Guest readers to celebrate books are always welcome -- speak with your
child's classroom teacher or Mrs. Ahlfeld or Mrs. Mark if you'd like to come in and read a favorite!
We hope parents will join us in promoting literacy for our students! |

Teachers: please remember that the Book Fair is your library class for that week; so if you visit the library on another day, you will not have Library class at your regular time.
Please remember to fill out a wish list. I will put one in everyones box this year as a reminder. I post them and parents can buy for your classroom. Scholastic changed their profit structure this year to reduce the amount of profit we get from the Book Fair, so Im sorry to let you know I wont be able to fill the wish lists as Ive done in the past. I need every paltry penny were going to get for the author visits!
If you have a student for whom you believe it will be a hardship for him or her to buy a book, please let me know.
Thanks,
Kelly

Read Across America Day!
Tuesday, March 2
|
|
|
|
Mettawee celebrated Read Across America Day, held on Dr. Seuss' birthday, by having an All School Read. The entire school, including students, teachers and staff, read "Duck! Rabbit!" a fun picture book about different points of view. Parents who enter the building on that day were strongly encouraged to take a moment and read it too! There was be a copy in the front lobby. It was also a great day to read to your child's class if you would like-- check with your child's teacher if you are interested. We have really enjoyed these All School Read days in the past -- it's wonderful to have a story that we all have in common. If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Ahlfeld at 645-9009,ext. 215 or kahlfeld@brsu.org. Please join us in our All School Read and make sure you vote -- is it a duck or a rabbit?

Our readers are off to an exciting start this year! Students in grades K-3 will be reading the Red Clover picture books and choosing their favorites, and students in grades 4-6 can choose to participate in the Dorothy Canfield Fisher (DCF) books contest. Our older students can write reviews of DCF books on our blog, vote for their favorite book and win prizes for participating. It's great to see so many of our students excited about books!
I thought it might be a helpful reminder for parents to know our book return schedule. Books may be checked out for one week, so students should return books on their next library class. Students who would like more time with a book can always renew, and students who finish early are more than welcome to come in on their own during breakfast or lunch and make an early book switch!
Here are the days library books are due for each class:
Kindergarten -- Wednesdays
First grade -- Wednesdays
Second grade -- Tuesdays
Third grade -- Thursdays
Fourth grade -- Thursdays
Fifth and Sixth grade -- our 5/6 students are independently shopping for their books so they may come in any time to borrow and return books.
Thanks for your wonderful support of our Mettawee Readers!

Books and Beyond Theme 2009-2010
"Mettawee Reading Olympians"
This year's Books and Beyond theme is "Mettawee Reading Olympians".
Students will be celebrating the Winter Olympics 2010 held in Vancouver, Canada by moving around 8 stations: bob sledding, figure skating, skeleton, biathlon, snowboarding, alpine skiing, ski jumping, and ice hockey. The students who complete the eight stations earn their Gold Medal at our end of the year reading celebration ceremony. This program will run from September 22nd to May 28th.
We hope all Mettawee students will read at home throughout the year and share with their parents the love of reading.
