SOCIAL STUDIES in Our Classrooms |
| This year the fourth graders, as part of their Vermont studies, are creating a wiki to learn and share their learning about Vermont's economy. A wiki is a website which can be modified and edited by the users. Fourth graders are working in collaborative teams to collect information about an aspect of Vermont's economy. Their work is centered round a set of focusing questions. Students answer the questions and actively create new content on the wiki. The wiki is used for learning and to share learning. | ||||

| Mettawee Community School's 4th grade classes had very happy hikers during our September 16th trip to Mount Independence. It was a super way to kick off our year long study of Vermonts history. Each child learned a lot with this hands-on history event. We started with orientation in the museum. The fourth graders studied a large mural depicting how Mount Independence looked in 1776. Next they watched a short film for more background. After the film they got into groups to examine actual artifacts and replicas. They reported their archaeological findings out to the whole group. The classes had a great tour of the museum, and after an enjoyable picnic lunch it was off to the trails. We hiked approximately four miles. Along the way we stopped to take in views of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga as well as to read the signs explaining what we were seeing. All this helped us imagine what it may have looked like more than 230 years ago when 8000 troops were stationed there. It was a terrific trip. Thanks go out to each child for their attentive and thoughtful consideration of an important piece of Vermonts history. A special thanks goes to our parent chaperones: Brooke Burnham, Paul Hilliard, and Teri Schauer who helped make the day such a success. |
